第三部分 阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,共20分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑.

A

Language is a major problem for the European Union (EU). The agreement or treaty(条约)which created the anization that eventually became the EU, the Treaty of Rome, stated that each country’s language must be treated equally. The original six countries had only three languages between them: French, German and Dutch/Flemish. However, there are now 15 countries in the EU, with a total of 12 languages. EU documents must be translated into all these languages, and at official meetings, the speeches must be translated into all the languages by interpreters(口译者).

All this translating is very expensive and time-consuming. It is said that nearly half of all employees of the EU are engaged in translating documents and speeches, and nearly half of the EU’s administrative(管理方面的)costs are spent on this task. In the near future it is probable that several more countries, most of which hing their own languages, will join the EU to make the situation even worse.

The problem is not just cost; there are practical difficulties as well. With 12 languages, there are 132 possible “translation situations” that might be needed. It is often difficult to find people in the right place at the right time who can translate from (for example) Danish into Greek, or Dutch into Portuguese, at a high professional standard.

In practice, the problem has been made less serious by the use of English in many contacts between EU officials, since almost all of them speak some English. However, any action to reduce the number of official languages (perhaps to four or five) would be a blow to the pride of the aller countries. Another monly suggested solution is to make English the official language for all EU business. However, this is strongly protested against by powerful member countries like France and Germany. 51. The writer mentions “Danish into Greek” in Paragraph 3 as an example of ___ .

A. a situation that occurs often B. languages easily being interpreted

C. a situation that might be difficult to deal with D. one of the 12 situations that requires an interpreter

52. According to the writer, the use of English in contacts among EU officials has ___ .

A. reduced the effect of the problem B. reduced the number of official languages

C. angered the officials who don’t speak English D. been supported by powerful member countries

53. The writer suggests in the last paragraph that if the number of official languages was reduced, ___ .

A. the aller member countries would be pleased

B. the EU would not know which official languages to choose

C. only languages which are easy to translate would be used officially

D. countries whose languages were not used officially would be unhappy

I’ve been writing for most of my life. The book Writing without Teachers introduced me to one difference and one practice that he helped my writing processes greatly. The difference is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to use both to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much we might like to think so.

Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest trouble with writing that most of us encounter. If you are listening to a 5th grade English teacher correcting your grammar while you are trying to capture(俘获)a fleeting(稍纵即逝的)thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw(未加工的)form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking as it is.

The practice that can help you past your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing”. In free writing, the goal is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, and no criticizing. The aim is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas will e from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notebook or your screen.

Now you he raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve been persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually he and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near. Instead of staring at a blank, start filling it with words no matter how bad they could be, stop halfway through your ailable time and rework your raw writing into something closer to the finished product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.

54. What does the author mean when he says the creative mind and the critical mind “cannot work in parallel” in the writing process?

A. They are in disagreement all the time with each other.

B. They cannot be regarded as equally important.

C. No one can be both creative and critical.

D. One cannot use them at the same time.

55. What usually prevents people from writing on according to Paragraph 3?

A. Putting their ideas in raw form. B. Attempting to edit as they’re writing.

C. Trying to capture their fleeting thoughts. D. Paying no attention to grammatical problems.

56. In what way does the critical mind help the writer in the writing process?

A. It improves his writing into a better shape. B. It allows him to sit on the side and observe.

C. It ses the writing time ailable to him. D. It helps him to e up with new ideas.

The Sahara Festival is a celebration of the very recent past. The three-day event is not fixed to the same dates each year, but generally takes place in November or December. It’s well attended by tourists, but even better attended by locals.

During the opening ceremonies, after the official greetings from the government leaders, people who attend the festival begin to march artly before the viewing stands, and white camels transport their riders across the sands. Horsemen from different nations display their beautiful clothes and their fine horsemanship. One following another, groups of musicians and dancers from all over the Sahara take their turn to show off their wonderful traditional culture. Groups of men in blue and yellow play horns and beat drums as they dance in different designs. On their knees in the sand, a group of women in long dark dresses dance with their hair: their long, dark, shiny hair is thrown back and forth in the wind to the rhythm(节奏)of their dance.

The local and visiting Italian dogs are anxious to run after hares(野兔). The crowd is on its feet for the camel races. Camels and riders run far into the distance, and then return to the finish line in front of the cheering people. Towards the evening, there es the grand finale of the opening day, an extremely exciting horserace. All the riders run very fast on horseback. Some riders hang off the side of their saddles(马鞍). Some even ride upside down―their legs and feet straight up in the air―all at full speed. Others rush down the course together, men arm in arm, on different horses. On and on they went. So fast and so wonderful!

57. The Sahara Festival is a festival which is ___ .

A. of a very

In the United States, train transportation is unpopular pared with cars and airplanes. Most people like treling by car or by air.

Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study. The study is about how many miles Americans treled by different means of transportation. They only had trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all the miles were treled in personal vehicles(车辆). Forty-one percent were treled in airplanes. Two percent were treled in buses. And less than one percent of miles were treled in trains.

Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years, the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of passengers has increased, it is still very all now. In countries such as France, Germany, or Japan, more people use trains.

There are several reasons why many American people don’t like to trel by train.

Firstly, Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can trel as fast as trains. These highways connect all major cities in America. Secondly, many trelers like to be independent. When they use their own cars they can decide when to trel. Thirdly, many buses trel between major cities. Bus trel is less costly than train trel.

In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, trel from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Airplanes can carry passengers over long distances much faster. People who do not want to spend long time treling by train decide to fly. For these people sing time is the most important thing.
