Theresearchers,usingamicroscope,high-speedcameraandothertools,hadpreviouslyrevealedtheformationofbumps,foldsandvortex-likefeaturesonslidingmetalsurfaces.Thenewfindingsbuildonthepreviouspaper,publishedin2016inPhysicalReviewLetters,toshowhowthebehiorleadstocracksandwearparticles.

Thefindingswerecounter-intuitivebecausetheexperimentwasconductedatroomtemperature,andtheslidingconditionsdidnotgenerateenoughheattosoftenthemetal.Yet,theswirlingflowiorelikebehiorseeninfluidsthaninsolids,Chandrasekarsaid.

Theteamobservedwhathappenswhenawedge-shapedpieceofsteelslidesoveraflatpieceofaluminumorcopper.Themetalsaremonlyusedtomodelthemechanicalbehiorofmetals.

"Wespeculatedintheearlierpaperthattheswirlyfluid-likesurfaceflowdiscoveredonslidingmetalsurfacesislikelytoimpactwearinslidingmetalsystems,"hesaid."Nowweareconfirmingthisspeculationbydirectobservations."

Theobservationsshowhowtinybumporminfrontofthewedge,followedbytheswirlingmovement.Whenthewedgeangleisshallow,theflowislaminar,orooth.However,itchangestoaswirlyflowwhentheangleisadjustedtoaless-shallowangle,mimickingwhathappensinactualslidingmetalparts.Asthewedgeslidesacrossthemetalspecimen,foldormbetweenthebumps,andthenthefoldstranormintotearsandcracksinthewakeofthewedge,eventuallyfallingoffaswearparticles.

"Asingleslidingpassissufficienttodamagethesurface,andsubsequentpassesresultinthegenerationofplatelet-likewearparticles,"Chandrasekarsaid.

Thebehiorwascapturedinmoviesthatshowtheflowincolor-codedlayersjustbelowthesurfacesofthecopperandaluminumspecimens.

Thedefectsrangeinsizefrom5to25micronsandaresimilartothosefoundinslidingponentssuchaspartsinautomotiveengines,pressorsandnumeroustypesofequipmentandmachinery.

"Inthepastweonlysawthesefeaturesaftertheyhadformed,andweattributedthemtovariouspossiblemechanis,"hesaid."Here,weshowamechaniforhowtheyareformed.Thedefectfeaturesobservedalsooccurinsurfacescreatedbymanufacturingprocesseslikegrinding,polishing,burnishing,peening,drawing,extrusion,rolling,andsoon,whichareallmonlyusedinmakingstructuralandmechanicalponentsinthegroundtransportation,aerospace,sheet-andwire-metalsprocessing,andenergysystemssectors."
